Michael Belanger SHCPS Impact of Technology in Education 2008-2009 Musical Keyboarding Overview: This project was created to integrate keyboarding skills, writing skills, and technology standards. Students will play musical chairs with writing. Grade 6-8 Standards Covered: 1.4 1.6 1.7 Student Learning Outcomes: Students will: v Identify and use a variety of storage media (i.e., CDs, DVDs, flash drives, school servers, and online storage spaces), and provide a rationale for using a certain medium for a specific purpose. v Demonstrate use of intermediate features in word processing applications (e.g., tabs, indents, headers and footers, end notes, bullet and numbering, tables). v Create, save, open, and import a word processing document in different file formats (e.g., RTF, HTML) Length: This project will take approximately 2 classes from start to finish.Materials: v Laptops v Network access
Teacher Background/Resources: The teacher will need to know how to use Word. The teacher will also need to know how to save student’s work into the server, and have the capability to print student’s work when completed. Required Student Knowledge Students will have prior experience using Word, but it will only be used in a simple way. Knowledge is not required, but helpful. Students will need to understand the writing process. Product and Performances: Students will write their thoughts into a story/song/poem stemming from a starter paragraph of a story where they all type from the same source. Then put music on for two minutes (or whatever time limit you prefer) and have them work on the story until the music stops. They switch chairs and continue until you decide when the ending should be. You can either say “finish story” or let the last person finish while the music plays, or let them finish up briefly wherever they land after the music ends. Give them a few minutes to make sure all tabs, indents, line spacing, headers and footers, end notes, bullet and numbering, tables, symbols/special characters are in place prior to turning in the paper. Assessment: Students will be assessed according to their final document and the thoughtfulness of their writing. Technology skills required/developed: - Understand the functions of Word
- Learn how to save documents into the server
