Microsoft Excel 3-5

 

Overview:

This project was created to teach students the basics about what can be done in Microsoft Excel and give them experience creating and editing spreadsheets, and usage of our district server.

 

Grade 3-5

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will

·         Demonstrate basic steps in using available hardware and applications (e.g., log into a computer, connect/disconnect peripherals, upload files from peripherals).

·         Demonstrate intermediate keyboarding skills and proper keyboarding techniques.

·         Demonstrate an understanding of the spreadsheet as a tool to record, organize, and graph information.

·         Identify and explain terms and concepts related to spreadsheets (i.e., cell, column, row, values, labels, chart, graph).

·         Enter/edit data in spreadsheets and perform calculations using simple formulas (+, -, *, /), observing the changes that occur.

·         Save, retrieve, and delete electronic files on a hard drive or school network.

·         Use spreadsheets and other applications to make predictions, solve problems, and draw conclusions.

 

 

Length:

This project will take approximately 5 classes from start to finish.

Materials:

  • Teacher laptop with projector/or Interactive Whiteboard
  • Laptops with Microsoft Office installed for students
  • Network Access

 

Teacher Background/Resources:

The teacher will need to know how to operate an Interactive Whiteboard and have basic knowledge of the use of Microsoft Excel in order to be of assistance to the students. Also, saving to the server and upload graphics/documents.

Required Student Knowledge:

Basic typing skills and be comfortable using the laptop computers.

 

Product and Performances:

Interactive Whiteboard/or PowerPoint use with built-in activities to reinforce student knowledge.

 

Assessment:

Students will be assessed by creating an EXCEL spreadsheet by the end of five classes.

 

Technology skills required/developed:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel basics.
  • Use and importance of “Save As” feature.
