World Art and Music: Quiz 1

Part 1: Short Answers.  Please answer in complete sentences.

1.       Please explain the legend of China’s music.  4 points 

China’s music was told through an ancient legend about an emperor who travelled into the mountains of western China.  He was asked to bring back specific pitches that would create music.  As he was searching a male bird known as a phoenix appeared and sang six different pitches. He was answered by a female who sang six pitches of her own.  These pitches were matched on cut bamboo sticks and brought back.  The twelve pitches were known as a lu scale, now known as a chromatic scale.

 

2.       How many tones create the pentatonic scale?  Where is it found?  2 points

The pentatonic scale is made up of five pitches from the lu scale.  It is found in East Asia and other places around the world.

 

3.       Why should Americans study the Chinese language? List three reasons.  3 points

Americans should study the Chinese language because:

1.       It creates new opportunities for students to learn abroad

2.       They can collaborate with China to solve global problems

3.       They may learn about China’s rich culture

4.       It will surpass English as the most widely used language on the internet

5.       A shift in the Asian and Pacific Islands population is expected to grow in the United States, meaning more people will be speaking Asian languages.

 

4.        What is pinyin and why is it necessary for learning Chinese?  2 points

Pinyin is a the name for the system used to translate Chinese words. Pinyin is used to make learning Chinese easier, and also to provide a way for learning about obscure dialects of Chinese, not all of which are written.

5.        In your own words write down the procedures on drawing in the calligraphy style.  3 points

1.        Hold the calligraphy brush at the top with only your thumb, index and middle fingers in a horizontal position.  This will allow for the wrist to write.

2.       Use more than one type of brush to add texture to the different symbols.

3.       Calligraphy paper should be in a vertical position because the words will be shown in that position.
